Jazz Week at UIndy!

Jazz Week brings respected players to UIndy

The sixth annual Jazz Week opens April 8 at the University of Indianapolis, with nightly concerts featuring top local players and artists of regional and national renown.

The series culminates Saturday, April 13, with the classic sound of the Midcoast Swing Orchestra, led by Brent Wallarab and Mark Buselli. Jazz Week is curated by Professor Harry Miedema, director of Jazz Studies at UIndy.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the elegant Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of UIndy’s Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave. Tickets and more information are available at www.uindy.edu/arts or (317) 788-3251.

Monday, April 8 — UIndy Jazz Combo
Admission: Free

The university’s student combo performs jazz and American standards.

Tuesday, April 9 – UIndy Jazz Ensemble
Admission: Free

The university’s student big band is directed by veteran musician and jazz educator Harry Miedema.

Wednesday, April 10 – Steve Allee and Dick Sisto

Admission: $20; $10 for seniors; free for 18 and younger and college students with ID

Indiana-based pianist, composer and arranger Steve Allee is a nationally known jazz veteran, writing and performing for syndicated radio programs, network television and motion pictures. He has released six albums as a bandleader and serves as music director for the nationally syndicated radio program The Bob and Tom Show. Vibraphonist Dick Sisto is music director for Louisville’s famous Seelbach Bar and host of two public radio jazz shows. He has toured throughout the United States and Europe.

Thursday, April 11 – Saxophonist Danny Walsh

Admission: $20; $10 for seniors; free for 18 and younger and college students with ID

A veteran of the New York City jazz scene, Walsh is known for his unusual proficiency on both tenor and alto saxophone. His resume includes solo albums and several recordings with pioneering fusion drummer Lenny White. In this appearance, he will be backed by Steve Allee on piano, Jeremy Allen on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums.

Friday, April 12 – Trombonist Steve Davis

Admission: $20; $10 for seniors; free for 18 and younger and college students with ID

Considered one of today’s leading improvisers on the trombone, Steve Davis gained attention in the 1990s working with jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean and Chick Corea. He has appeared often in Downbeat magazine’s reader and critic polls and was nominated for Trombonist of the Year in 2010 and 2012 by the Jazz Journalists Association. A featured sideman on more than 100 recordings, he has worked recently with Freddie Hubbard and the New Jazz Composers Octet, Slide Hampton and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band, and the Jimmy Heath Big Band.

Saturday, April 13 – Midcoast Swing Orchestra

Admission: $20; $10 for seniors; free for 18 and younger and college students with ID

Formed in 1989, the Midcoast Swing Orchestra is a swing band in the 1930s-1940s style, featuring the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Les Brown. Led by local notables Brent Wallarab and Mark Buselli, the orchestra includes some of Indiana’s finest professional musicians delivering sizzling solos and tight ensemble performances.
