State Library hosts literature event featuring Kurt Vonnegut and Heinrich Böll

On Thursday, October 8, 2015 the Indiana State Library will host a presentation by Angela Spizig and Volkmar Schultz entitled “Heinrich Böll a German Author in the Home of Kurt Vonnegut.” The presentation will discuss the similarities between German Author Heinrich Böll and Indiana Author Kurt Vonnegut Jr., with readings from their works.

Steven Schmidt, Library Development Supervisor at the Indiana State Library said of the authors, “…two different writers, from two different countries, shared a horrifying experience in World War II which is reflected in their writings. Heinrich Böll won the Pulitzer Prize for his spare and haunted literature, in German, ‘The Trümmerliteratur,’ that grew out of his experiences in the war. Kurt Vonnegut’s writings, especially ‘Slaughterhouse-Five,’ are the American cousins of these stories of the ‘most excruciatingly painful things’ as Michael Crichton stated in his 1969 review of Vonnegut.”

“It is such an honor to host our important guests from our Sister City of Cologne. I must admit that I didn’t know very much about Heinrich Böll until reading his work over the past year,” said Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library CEO Julia Whitehead. “Böll is such an international treasure! I appreciate the differences and similarities in Vonnegut and Böll, and this event is one of the highlights of our year.”

The event is free and open to the public. A reception starts at 4:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 5 p.m. and a question and answer
