The Underpants

“The Underpants” adapted by Steve Martin

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Greenfield-based Acting Up Productions (AUP) will present Steve Martin’s adaptation of playwright Carl Sternhiem’s German farce “The Underpants” from April 12-21, 2013 at Theatre on the Square (TOTS) on stage two.

“Theobald Maske has an unusual problem: his wife’s underpants won’t stay on. One Sunday morning, they fall to her ankles right in the middle of town – a public scandal! Mortified, Theo swears to keep her at home until she can find some less unruly undies. Amid this chaos he’s trying to rent a room in their flat. The prospective lodgers have some underlying surprises of their own. In The Underpants, Steve Martin brings his comic genius and sophisticated literary style to Carl Sternheim’s classic 1910 farce.”1

Steve Martin is an American actor, comedian, musician, author, playwright, pianist and banjo player. He has earned Emmy, Grammy, and American Comedy awards, among other honors. Martin’s 2002 adaptation of Sternheim’s Die Hose (The Pants) was produced at New York City’s Off-Broadway theater Classic Stage Company from April 4, 2002 through April 28, 2002. The play, a “farcical send-up of bourgeois snobbery and conformity”2 was directed by Barry Edelstein and featured Cheryl Lynn Bowers and Byron Jennings as Louise and Theo Maske. The original Sternheim comedy sparked a scandal in 1911 and led to a temporary ban on the play.

AUP’s production stars Butler graduate Marcy Thornsberry as Louise and Michael Hosp as Theo, her mortified husband. Rounding out the fantastic and hilarious cast are Beverly Roche as Gertrude, Ian Cruz as Versati, Josh Lenn as Cohen, Dave Harold as Klingelhoff, and Tristan Ross as the King of Germany.

The show is directed and designed by AUP’s artistic director R. Brian Noffke. Shantel Sifuentes is assistant to the director and Cheryl Fesmire is Assistant Director. Shawn D. Evans is the stage manager and Rebekah Foster is the costume designer.

The Underpants will be presented Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. April 12-21 at Theatre on the Square, Stage Two at 627 Massachusetts Avenue, Indianapolis. Tickets are $12 Reserved or $10 for Seniors/Students with ID and $15/$12 at the door. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 317-207-0171 or online at www.ActingUp-Productions.com.
